Trump’s “Super Intelligence” Push Sparks a Rush for Slovenia’s .si Domains

What began as a change in terminology inside the U.S. government has created an unexpected side effect thousands of kilometres away: a sudden surge in demand for Slovenia’s .si internet domains.

On September 22, 2026, Donald Trump told the United Nations General Assembly that the U.S. would use “Super Intelligence,” or “SI,” instead of “Artificial Intelligence” in official documents. He argued that the word “artificial” made the technology sound fake.

There was an immediate twist. .si is Slovenia’s country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) — and the abbreviation Trump was promoting happened to be exactly the same.

That coincidence has turned .si into an unexpected talking point in the technology and domain-name markets.

From AI to “SI”

Trump's terminology change did not initially involve Slovenia or its internet infrastructure.

At the UN, he said the United States would refer to the technology as “super intelligence”, shortened to SI, and said the new wording would be used in official U.S. documents. The White House subsequently formalised the change on September 29 through an executive order directing executive-branch departments and agencies to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in official correspondence, public communications and certain policy documents.

For the rest of the world, the term AI remains widely used.

But for domain investors, two letters were enough to create an entirely new opportunity.

Why Slovenia’s .si Domain Suddenly Matters

The .si extension has long been associated with Slovenia. It is the country's official internet domain and has traditionally been used by Slovenian businesses, organisations and individuals.

Trump's use of SI gave the same two letters a second possible meaning: Super Intelligence.

That makes domains ending in .si particularly interesting for companies working in AI and related technologies.

A name such as:

company.si

can still represent a Slovenian website.

But a technology company could also see the ending as part of a Super Intelligence brand.

The domain itself has not changed. .si is still Slovenia's country-code domain. What changed was the attention around the letters.

Registrations Jumped After Trump's Speech

The numbers show how quickly the market reacted.

Reports from the Slovenian domain registry indicated that more than 6,000 .si registrations were recorded in the two days following Trump's UN speech. More than 2,000 registrations were recorded on the day of the speech, followed by more than 4,000 the next day.

The total number of registered .si domains subsequently passed 220,000.

There is an important qualification, though.

The Slovenian registry has cautioned that the entire increase should not automatically be attributed to Trump. The .si namespace had already been experiencing growth before the attention surrounding “SI.”

What can be observed is that the discussion around Super Intelligence coincided with an unusually large additional surge.

That distinction matters because domain registrations can rise for several reasons at the same time.

Domain Investors Were Already Watching

The rush was not simply a matter of businesses changing their websites.

Domain investors also began registering names that could potentially become valuable later.

Industry tracking showed that registrations of Slovenian .si domains briefly overtook .ai registrations following Trump's September 22 remarks. There were also signs of speculative purchasing, with many newly registered names subsequently being listed for resale on domain marketplaces.

That is a familiar pattern in the domain industry.

When a new word, abbreviation or trend suddenly becomes popular, investors often try to secure short or commercially attractive domain names before someone else does.

The difficult part is knowing which names will actually retain value.

The .ai Comparison

The obvious comparison is .ai.

The .ai domain technically belongs to Anguilla, a British overseas territory. But the extension became strongly associated with artificial intelligence as AI moved into the mainstream technology market.

That association created a major commercial opportunity for .ai domains.

The .si situation is different.

AI is already an established global term. “Super Intelligence” is much newer, and its long-term adoption outside the Trump administration remains uncertain.

That means there is a much bigger question behind the current .si rush:

Will “SI” become a lasting technology term, or will AI remain the dominant name?

Nobody can know that yet.

Slovenia Didn't Rename Its Domain

One detail is easy to misunderstand.

Slovenia has not turned .si into an AI-specific domain.

The extension remains Slovenia's country-code top-level domain.

The sudden interest comes entirely from the coincidence between:

SI = Super Intelligence

and

.si = Slovenia's internet domain

This distinction is important for businesses considering a .si registration. Buying a .si domain does not automatically make a website an “SI” or Super Intelligence website.

It is still a Slovenian ccTLD.

The technology connection is a branding opportunity created by the current attention around the abbreviation.

Register.si Responds to the Surge

Slovenia's domain registry has also acknowledged the increased demand.

The registry advised holders of trademarks, slogans and company names that did not already have a .si domain to consider registering one.

At the same time, the organisation pushed back against suggestions that Slovenia was suddenly making enormous amounts of money from the registration boom.

The registry charges registrars a standard wholesale fee for registrations. The amount ultimately paid by a customer depends on the registrar selling the domain.

That means claims about Slovenia receiving enormous unexpected profits from the .si rush need to be treated carefully.

Why the Timing Is Interesting for Tech Companies

For technology startups, a domain is more than an address.

It can become part of the company's identity.

The sudden attention around SI creates an interesting naming opportunity for companies working on:

  • AI agents
  • Autonomous systems
  • Machine intelligence
  • AI infrastructure
  • Advanced computing
  • Robotics
  • AI research
  • Enterprise AI
  • Future technology

A company that already has a strong .com or .ai identity may not need to move away from it.

But securing a matching .si domain could make sense as a defensive registration or as part of a separate product or campaign.

The decision ultimately depends on the brand, audience and availability of the name.

Will .si Become the Next .ai?

That is the question driving much of the speculation.

There is a clear similarity between the two stories.

.ai became commercially powerful because people naturally connected the letters with Artificial Intelligence.

Now .si has unexpectedly gained attention because of Super Intelligence.

But the two situations are not equivalent.

AI is used by governments, researchers, companies and consumers around the world. Super Intelligence is also an established concept in AI research, but Trump's current use of the term as a replacement for “Artificial Intelligence” is a much newer development.

The White House has now formally directed executive agencies to use the new terminology, but that does not mean the entire global technology industry will adopt it.

For now, the domain market is reacting to the possibility rather than a confirmed long-term shift.

A Small Country at the Centre of a Global Tech Story

There is something unusual about the whole episode.

A speech about artificial intelligence at the United Nations created a measurable effect on an internet namespace belonging to a country with a population of roughly two million.

Slovenia did not create the term “Super Intelligence.”

It did not ask for the attention.

Its .si extension simply happened to match the abbreviation that suddenly became politically and technologically significant in the United States.

That coincidence has put Slovenian domain names in front of a global audience.

What Happens Next?

The future of .si as a technology-oriented domain will depend largely on what happens to the term Super Intelligence itself.

If SI becomes widely adopted by technology companies, researchers and governments, demand for .si names could remain strong.

If the wider industry continues to use AI, some of the current registrations could turn out to be speculative bets that never develop into meaningful websites or brands.

For domain investors, that uncertainty is part of the game.

For Slovenia, meanwhile, the episode has already delivered something unusual: its national internet extension has suddenly become part of a global conversation about the future of intelligent technology.

And all of it started with two letters.

SI.
